Types of Cocktail Strainers

  1. Hawthorne Strainer: The Hawthorne strainer is perhaps the most commonly recognized strainer, known for its coiled spring design that fits snugly into a mixing glass or shaker tin. Its main function is to strain out ice and large ingredients, ensuring a smooth pour while allowing for the release of cocktails directly into the glass.

  2. Julep Strainer: The Julep strainer, with its elegant, concave shape, is favored for stirred cocktails like the classic Mint Julep. It's excellent at keeping ice and herbs within the mixing vessel, offering a clean and visually appealing presentation.
For that extra touch of cocktail finesse, try double-straining your drinks with a fine mesh strainer. After using either the Hawthorne or Julep strainer over your mixing glass, hold the fine mesh strainer over the cocktail glass, and finish the pour. The mesh will catch even the tiniest particles, resulting in a crystal-clear libation and guaranteeing every sip is a work of art.

Can the Standard Strainer be used by both professional bartenders and home enthusiasts?

The Standard Strainer was developed for professional bartending. That said, we think it’s the ideal strainer for anyone who values precision, quality and style.

Does the Standard Strainer have any unique features or design elements that set it apart from other strainers?

The Standard Strainer has a uniquely large number of coils, which enables it to trap smaller particles than most (if not all) other models on the market. Further, our hybridization of classic Hawthorne and Julep Strainer styles make it an all-in-one solution for craft programs. The wooden handle also adds a dash of class that is rare in the strainer category.

Should the Standard Strainer be used in tandem with a fine mesh strainer?

Yes, but not always.. Using a fine mesh strainer (aka double straining) is the best way to keep ice shards and particulates from making their way into a cocktail. That being said, not all cocktails require double-straining (though experts differ).

Are there any recommended storage methods for the Standard Strainer when not in use?

Much like other bar tools, how and where to store your strainer is a personal preference. Most bars store their hand tools within arm’s length of a cocktail station for easy access. We suggest placing your strainer within reach of your cocktail station (aka cockpit) and avoid storing strainers - or any tools for that matter - in standing water. The Standard Strainer also boasts a hanging loop if your underbar set-up permits.

Pro Tips for Using a Cocktail Strainer

  1. Chill Your Glassware: Before straining your cocktail, make sure your glassware is chilled. A cold glass helps maintain the drink's temperature and enhances the overall drinking experience.

  2. Master the Double Strain: For a silky-smooth cocktail, consider double straining. Use your primary strainer as you pour the cocktail from the shaker or mixing glass. Then, for an extra layer of filtration, strain it again through a fine mesh strainer as you pour it into the serving glass. This technique ensures no ice shards or pulp make their way into the final drink.

  3. Practice Control: When using a strainer, maintain control over the flow of liquid. Avoid rushing the pour, as this can cause spills or overfilling. Gradually and steadily pour the cocktail into the glass, allowing the strainer to catch any unwanted debris.
